I welcome you to join me in the exploration of the journey that has brought about the necessity of the nursing informatics specialists (NIS), to the healthcare arena, due to technological advances of the Information Age (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). These NIS are change agents, crucial for leveraging healthcare technologies and processes, which affect daily clinical practices, thereby improving patient safety and outcomes. McGonigle and Mastrian advise that "the introduction of the computer altered the way data and information are viewed and used and changed the way business is conducted. The computer is now changing nursing and health care" ( 2012, p.122).
Therefore, the goals of this presentation is to enrich your knowledge about nursing informatics (NI) by engaging you in the development and progression of the NI specialty and how the role of the NIS has developed and progressed.
This will be achieved by the following: (1) providing definitions surrounding the work of the NIS, (2) supplying a history of NI, (3) offering a brief overview of nurses as knowledge workers, (4) exploring the NIS history, along with why their work is so essential to safer healthcare, (5) presenting the NI competencies and the four levels of nursing, (6) explaining what makes NI a specialty and what the NIS' roles and responsibilities are, (7) offering ideas on how to empower future generations of nurses, and (8) envisioning what the future holds for the both the NIS and the healthcare arena. You will also be presented with two videos, where one demonstrates the NI competencies and the second one depicts how quickly our world is changing due to technology.
Lastly, this presentation will provide four questions for your consideration, which are to be posted into the forum for further discussion. You may also wish to create your own question in order to expand on this topic.
I look forward to this learning opportunity with you.
Thank you,
Kashmiro
