Necessity for NIS Involvement
In order to implement, utilize and sustain the necessary EHIS, there needs to be end-user engagement and the NIS role is essential in bringing about these outcomes. There are also many other reasons why the roles and responsibilities of the NIS are so essential:
- " Catalysts include
federal initiatives that encourage nationwide adoption of electronic health
records (EHRs) and reports such as the Institute of Medicine’s that claim
clinical information systems improve processes and ultimately save patient
lives" (HIMSS Nursing Informatics Task Force, 2007, p.39).
- " The introduction of the ERH has strained clinicians to learn this new technology and incorporate it into their already busy days. It has been estimated that nurses spend as little as 15% of their days with their patients and as much as 50% of their day documenting" (HIMSS Nursing Informatics Task Force, 2007, p.40).
- Assisting nurses to incorporate this new technology into their daily workflow is one of many challenges that the NIS may tackle (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012, p.136).
- The NIS " combines the expertise of nursing science, computer science to manage data gathered while caring for patients, and then making sure that IT system will aid in communicating that data to the appropriate personnel and carry out specific functions" (Ericksen, 2009, p.35)

Enhancing clinical practice:
- With the onslaught of advanced technologies and the implementation of EHIS, it becomes imperative that knowledgeable NIS collaborate with other nursing specialties to promote and encourage that the nursing profession continues to be enhanced by new technologies to advance clinical decision-making and patient care delivery (HIMSS Nursing Informatics Task Force, 2007).
