Definitions
Informatics definition:
Saba (2001) advises that the term informatics was derived from the French term informatique, which means to refer to the computer milieu.
The Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) defines informatics as "the discipline concerned with the study of information and manipulation of information via computer-based tools” (2007, p. 44).
Nursing informatics (NI) definition:
Graves and Corcoran define NI as a “combination of computer science, information science and nursing science designed to assist in the management and processing of nursing data, information and knowledge to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of nursing care” (1989, p.227).
The Canadian Nurses Informatics Association (CNIA) advises that, in 2009, the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), defined NI as " Nursing Informatics science and practice integrates nursing, its information and knowledge and their management with information and communication technologies to promote the health of people, families and communities world wide" (CNIA, 2012).
The IMIA encouraged all of its members, including the CNIA, to use this definition (CNIA, 2012)
Nursing informatics specialist defintion:
These individuals are registered nurses who are "...prepared at least at the baccalaureate level who possess additional knowledge and skills specific to information management and computer technology. They focus on information needs for the practice of nursing, which includes education, administration, research and clinical practice" (Staggers, Gassert & Curran, 2002, p. 386).
