Addressing the Knowledge Gap for Future Nurses

Canadian nursing leaders and educators have reached similar conclusions on the need for enhanced NI education.
Hebert advises that "Part of the process is considering how nurses, now and in the future, can best be prepared to actively participate in the decisions related to using and evaluating information and ICT in their practice, as well as developing new applications which benefit nursing and seeing opportunities for new ways of doing work" (2007, p.13")
In the past, the nursing student focused on the utilization of technologies. However, now , these students "must be prepared to learn how to focus more on producing and using information that supports knowledge generation in nursing" (Hebert, 2007, p.14).
"The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) received funding from Canada Health Infoway to promote the development of a culture within nursing education in Canada that embraces the integration of nursing informatics in curricula and professional practice” (CASN, 2012, p.1)
Therefore, the CASN (2012) defined three entry-to-practice nursing informatics competencies under the domains of:
